Recommendations for Photo-blogging?

A local New Brunswick blogger is looking for a good photo-blogging application for his site. Any suggestions? Please post your responses on Brikwall’s blog:

I want easy to use yet highly-customizable software for my new photoblog. However, I’m having trouble finding something that meets my needs.

I tried PixelPost but it won’t install properly on my host’s servers. It uses “index.php” for the home page, which the host does not permit (although, oddly, they do allow “index.php3″ and “index.php4″).

I currently have Sylverblog installed but I’m having some trouble with it. I’ll probably have to dump it.

I looked at Movable Type but it’s too bloated, requiring upwards of 100MB for a proper install. Besides, although highly-customizable, it requires several PhD’s in computer science simply to change the blog’s title.

I’m not certain that WordPress will meet my needs, either.

I’d prefer to have dedicated photoblogging software, if at all possible.

Any suggestions?

  1. What about WordPress & Flickr together?

Flickr has a nice tool that will let you blog any photograph from their interface. I know it interacts quite nicely with WordPress as well.

  2. I may yet go with WordPress (to be honest, I haven’t had a chance to take another look at the photoblog since I wrote my original post). However, I’m not too keen on the Flickr blogging tools. I prefer to simply link to the image manually and use my own blog’s style sheets to adjust or modify the appearance.

  3. Hi Brikwall, I’m in the same situation. Altough I could make pixelpost work, but extra.hu decided to change sql settings, so I can’t upload ever since. :(

I’m still trying to find a photoblog tool that is simple, works with an upload + title + publish method.

    I’ll try silverblog now. :)

    All the Best

  4. Hi Brikwall, I really liked PixelPost but couldn’t get a lot of the features to work and everytime I tried to customise the site I would lose everything. I moved to Sylverblog which seems much better and I’m in the early process of customising a theme. There does seem to be a dearth of decent photoblog software.

  5. I’m not happy with Silverblog, either. As I mentioned in the edit to my original post, I want to be able to link to photos already uploaded to my Flickr photostream rather than upload photos directly to my photoblog. It will be quicker, easier, and require much less storage space than direct uploads. Unfortunately, Silverblog doesn’t seem to offer that option. Besides, I’m having trouble getting Silverblog to work properly.

I haven’t had time to look at this since i made my post. However, I now feel the best option may be to use WordPress or other “regular” blogging software and simply customize it to get a one-post-per-day photoblog. As Cal mentions, there’s not not only a dearth of good photoblogging software, there’s also the problem of getting those available to work, or at least to work the way you want.

Anyways, I appreciate the comments and will still welcome any new thoughts or ideas anyone migh have. Thanks!

  6. You can try “Snaplog”. Snaplog is a Windows photo blog software that runs on your desktop. Snaplog resizes your images, creates the HTML pages and uploads everything to your website when you publish.
