airborne finds

On the last Friday of each month I curate some of the observations and insights that were shared on social media. I call these Friday’s Finds.

@DRTomlinsonEP: “I know I go on about this AN AWFUL lot, but if you have no idea how a pathogen is transmitted, you have no idea how to PREVENT transmission.
[UK Chief Medical Officer, Professor] Chris Whitty knew SARS2 was airborne, 5 Mar 2020”YouTube Video

@JimRosenthal4: “Boeing study shows that on an airplane with HEPA filtration, particles transferred between a cougher and breather are about the same as separation of 2 meters in a conference room. Wear a mask!”Boeing Cabin Airflow Video

How Brisbane Independent School prevented outbreaks of COVID-19, despite Omicron wave via @Nathalie_K1

Using a smoke machine, they [a group of dads] studied airflow patterns in the school’s five classrooms and administration areas.

Carbon dioxide meters were also used to identify low-ventilation areas or “dead spots”.

They then purchased air purifiers — known as high-efficiency particulate absorbing (HEPA) filters — to mitigate the risk from SARS-CoV-2 particles that might be circulating in classrooms and other indoor areas of the school.

Air and surface sampling for monkeypox virus in UK hospitals

Findings: We identified widespread surface contamination (66 positive out of 73 samples) in occupied patient rooms (MPXV DNA Ct values 24·7-38·6), on healthcare worker personal protective equipment after use, and in doffing areas (Ct 26·3-34·3). Five out of fifteen air samples taken were positive. Significantly, three of four air samples collected during a bed linen change in one patient’s room were positive (Ct 32·7-35·8). Replication-competent virus was identified in two of four samples selected for viral isolation, including from air samples collected during the bed linen change.

@kprather88: “To all infection control doctors and public health officials, yes there is actually an entire book that describes the airborne behavior of aerosols and how they float and accumulate in indoor air for hours. This book is the latest greatest by Bill Hinds and Yifang Zhu.” —> Aerosol Technology 3rd Ed.

Long Covid Infographic [below]:
“I’ve made this summary of the latest Long Covid research (condensed for a phone screen) in an attempt to help inform and communicate the biological nature of this horrible condition. Feel free to use it however you’d like (helping explain Long Covid to family, informing journalists of the latest research etc).

This gave me some purpose back after a long period of struggling to do even the most basic tasks due to LC.

I hope it’s helpful” —@SamMc413
