I am a Canadian

John Diefenbaker, Prime Minister of Canada, in 1960, while referring to the Canadian Bill of Rights:

“I am Canadian, a free Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship God in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, free to choose those who govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.”

I was only one year old at the time. Of course, each generation has to keep fighting for its rights and freedoms and ensure the rights of those who cannot.

It’s a great country — Happy Canada Day!

  1. Too bad you lost one of the most important freedoms, the freedom and right to protect yourself and your loved ones. The misguided and misinformed in the US keep trying to take away our rights as well. Fortunately our Supreme Court just ruled that our constitution does give the individual the right to keep and bear arms. Happy Canada Day; may you soon regain your freedoms.

  2. Never had it, never lost it, don’t miss it, Scott. Like most Commonwealth countries, Canada is based on “peace, order and good government”. It may sound boring, but it works for most of us. I bore arms for my country for 25 years – more than enough for me.

  3. Unfortunately, you quotation is not exactly correct. You have omitted the word “God”. Also, the word “and” has been added before “free to choose…”
